The #WeLearn app is complementary to the literacy and integration classes that are already offered to refugees, which are not very successful at the moment, and should not replace them.

Our exercises contain interesting and easy-to- understand graphics as well as interactive features. We try to base our exercices the most possible on everyday life scenarios in Germany, so that users can familiarize themselves with the German culture and language in a playful way.

As our target user base consists of people who cannot read nor write the Latin alphabet, we ensured that our app be as intuitive as possible: we make use of universally understandable icons instead of text. We also make use of Artificial Intelligence with software recognition and voice recognition. For example, one exercise is for the user to read out loud the words written and be corrected by our app. Regarding the description of the exercises, we make use of voice-overs in Arabic, carefully explaining to the user what he or she has to do in the exercise concerned.

We are very interesting in scaling and we will additionally add voice-overs in other languages in order to reach a wider user-base. 

 

Similar apps already exist for general language learning but a language learning app specifically aimed at refugees – and more importantly those who are illiterate – does not yet exist. Using technology, we will therefore bring a solution to an issue that has not yet been solved by traditional teaching techniques.
